Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research seeks to improve the health of individuals, families, and populations by understanding the problems, issues, and alternatives in the design and delivery of health care services. This is accomplished through an interdisciplinary program of research, consultation, technical assistance, and training that focuses on timely and policy-relevant questions concerning the accessibility, adequacy, organization, cost, and effectiveness of health care services, and the dissemination of this information to policymakers and the general public.
Position Summary
The Social/Clinical Research Assistant (RA) will conduct applied research under the direction of a Sheps Center principal investigator (PI). The RA will work on research projects funded by the federal Office of Rural Health Policy. The primary responsibility will be providing analysis and writing briefs related to the Low Volume Hospitals or Uncompensated Care. Secondary responsibilities include research responsibilities that will support PIs in the NC Rural Health Research Program.
The Social/Clinical Research Assistant will conduct literature reviews by surveying academic, industry, policy, and grey literature for research, studies and information relevant to projects, survey research by questionnaire design, telephone and in-person interviews, write-up of survey results. The RA will conduct
data assembly by obtaining primary data from individuals and organizations and assembling and cleaning data from secondary data bases. He/She will conduct data analysis by using Stata and Excel to compile and analyze primary and secondary data, producing charts, graphs, and tables of data analyses suitable for publication and presentation to professional audiences.
The RA will write up results consisting of summarizing, relevant literature, distilling data analyses, and identifying policy implications for Findings Briefs and articles for peer-reviewed journals. He/She will
assist the Rural Center staff as needed, with report preparation, document distribution, and interview scheduling.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Research or policy experience in health services research. Experience working with large data sets, and ability to manage data collection, direct data analysis, and interpret various kinds of health services research.
